If you like R&B and soul then you will love this show. Dreamgirls began on Broadway back in 1981 and following a number of national and international tours has finally arrived to the West End.
This is full on glitz and with Swarovski sponsoring it you expect nothing less. Aside that, you have a cast full of outstanding vocal talent, wonderful costumes and an engaging storyline with script.
The story follows the career of a young female R&B act through the 1960s and 70s from backing singers through the ups and downs of showbiz to stardom. Effie, let’s say, is a feisty and vivacious young woman who steps up to take the lead of the female trip ‘The Dreams’ but due to the fickle and superficial nature of the business is soon pushed to the back. She and the other two soon learn the hard lessons that show business is as tough as it is fabulous.
We went along when the lead (Glee’s Amber Riley) was on holiday yet were fortunate enough to hear her stand in – Marisha Wallace. Marisha’s rendition of ‘And I am telling you…’ is quite possibly the best vocal West End performance I have ever seen, and I’ve been to a lot of shows. Her passion and character ability was unbelievable. I was not the only one to have tears in my eyes and goosebumps all at the same time.
Then you get the scene where Effie and Deena duet to ‘Listen’ which is a power ballad and was beautifully belted out by them both.
This is a must see.
The Savoy Theatre connects to the Savoy Hotel, just off the Strand.
Do I recommend this show? 10/10 yes I do.
